This invention is applicable to the rapidly growing home 3D printer market.

Sooner or later most people that own a 3D printer tries to justify the purchase by replacing an object that is broken or missing.

Unfortunately most objects around the house that you might want to copy are not going to be available in electronic format for the 3D printer to use and creating a 3D cad file is often difficult, requires technical expertise and is time consuming.

Current 3D scanners are expensive and can often struggle to capture the full shape of the object because of the need to place it upon a flat surface.

The Patent Application explains how the surface of an object can be mapped using a fixed position laser detector and rotating the object in all three axis within a gyroscope.

Position of the 3 gyroscope rings and distant to the object surface provide the basic surface co-ordinates.

It is envisaged that the scanner can purchased as a download to be printed and home assembled with the minimal electronics (laser scanner / encoders / wiring) shipped separately. Home assembly and the use of cheap off the shelf components means the costs can be kept extremely low.
