In described embodiments, a system for safety and protection of assets includes a wireless network, at least one sensor combined with one or more identification tags and either attached to or placed in proximity of the assets, at least one mobile device in communication with the wireless network, each mobile device including a sensor reader configured to acquire data from the at least one sensor, each mobile device transmitting the acquired sensor data across the wireless network, and a server, in communication with the wireless network, configured i) to communicate with the at least one mobile device and the at least one sensor, ii) to receive the acquired sensor data from the at least one mobile device, iii) to generate real-time and archival data on the assets, wherein the server is coupled to one or more databases including information related to the assets. When pre-programmed alert threshold set-points for a sensor are reached, the corresponding sensor triggers the mobile device to send an alert to alert components associated with the assets.
