Heating cooling and storing energy in buildings naturally

[Category : - RENEWABLE ENERGY]
[Viewed 1948 times]

Nature is the most efficient collector of energy: A simple flower opens and closes with the sun to collect energy. So why can’t buildings do the same?

Our invention called solar-fin consists of 3 parts: a collector which is in the form of a column made of a heat storing material (like concrete), a semi circular insulating material which can be rotated around the column and a connector which transfers heat from the collector to the reinforcement in the structure thereby distributing heat or cold to the building mass as required.

By simple rotation of the solar.FIN insulation, collectors are exposed to the sun as required to gain heat. To cool the building at night again the insulation can be opened so that the collector can be cooled by radiating heat to the night sky.

To retain and protect the building from heat or cold the insulation is closed

The secret of the system is that the insulation always retains its integrity, overcoming all the problems of previous systems.

Furthermore the collector is insulated from the building structure but can be connected when required either to heat or cool the building, transferring heat or cold to the building mass which is a natural storage medium.

So heat can be collected directly from the sun or cold by radiating energy to the night sky and the energy stored in the collector for use when required using just two moving parts.

There are further spin offs from this invention as the hot air produced can be used with heat pumps very efficiently to make very cold conditions, for instance freezing ground which is a great storage medium.

The facade or roof can be integrated with vents providing natural space heating or cooling, and even forced ventilation because of the temperature differences.

Potentially a building located in desert conditions where the day is very hot and nights freezing would not need any heating or cooling as the solar-fin system would do this naturally on a diurnal basis; like a flower!

Financial information

The solar-fin invention has the potential for a carbon neutral building footprint solving buildings heating and cooling energy needs. As an architect I would be delighted to develop the system into commercial use with a solid partner and together save huge amounts of energy.

I would also consider licensing and an outright sale.

The market potential is enormous. Most legislation concerning building is to conserve energy. This is the only system on the market that proactively heats or cools the building and stores energy for instant or later use. It will dramatically cut the carbon footprint and can even be used in areas with no electricity to make a well moderated living environment

The name solar-fin is registered worldwide
