Process For Isolation of Carotenoids

[Category : - OTHER- HUMAN NECESSITIES- HEALTH]
[Viewed 1461 times]

A process comprises contacting a carotenoid-containing liquid with a composition comprising at least one pi-bond-philic species, and removing the carotenoid complex from the liquid. The pi-bond-philic species may be a metal or metalloid. The composition may comprise a clay, zeolite AgO, Ag2O or silver silicates. Food-grade carotene was extracted from palm oil by treating with Ag-clay of formula Ag1.2[Mg4.8Li1.2 Si8O20(OH)4]. Alternatively, a hectorite clay is described wherein some of the sodium ions are replaced by silver ions. A synthetic hectorite clay was prepared from MgCl2.6H2O, LiCl, Na2Si3O7 and Na2CO3 in water under microwave irradiation; subsequent treatment with AgNO3 gave a silver intercalated synthetic clay.

ADVANTAGES OF THE ABOVE PATENTED PROCESS
a) The support being substantially free of transition metals, the extent of reversible binding occurring between the carotenoid and the support is greater compared to a support that contains transition metals under the same reaction conditions.

b) The support being coupled with silver ions is able to achieve reversible binding with carotenoids. such that the carotenoid can be readily extracted in an appropriate organic solvent, in high purity without the need for harsh extraction conditions, e.g., high temperatures, high pressure

c) The extraction conditions do not denature the carotenoids. or the carotenoid-containing liquid.source

APPLICATIONS:
a) to serve as light-harvesting pigment in photosynthesis and protecting organisms fro photo-oxidative damage
b) as antioxidant action in humans
c) as natural pigments in foods and cosmetic products
d) in nutraceutical/pharmaceutical industries
