The “Pal System” is a system is disclosed to communicate in vehicular traffic an intention of a driver of a vehicle to execute a parallel parking maneuver. The system includes a display generating a signal to indicate to other drivers the intention to execute the parallel parking maneuver to either a left side of the vehicle or a right side of the vehicle. The signal is distinct from and in addition to a turn signal for the vehicle indicating an intended left turn or right turn.

Prior to parking the user will be able to signal to other cars that it is backing up and which way they will be turning the wheel. Upon activation the strobe light will begin to flash and the red LED lights will light up sequentially indicating which direction the user will be cutting their wheels.

WHY THE PAL SYSTEM IS NEW AND NEEDED

Parallel parking is a method of parking a vehicle in line with other parked cars. When individuals parallel park they park their car on the street parallel to the curb of a road. People find it necessary to parallel park when perpendicular parking is not an option. This is common in downtown areas and in large metropolitan areas. In the best of circumstances Parallel parking is one of hardest challenges drivers face. Often time drivers will drive in circles until they can find a free spot. In our experience when we find a spot within a matter of seconds we begin to try and capture that coveted spot. The problem is that in areas where parallel parking is needed there is usually high traffic. There will be other cars behind you and this can often cause problems everyone involved. The drivers behind the car that is attempting to Parallel Park have no idea what is about to happen. This puts the unfortunate driver in the position where they either have to back up and/or wait for an opportunity to go around. Depending on traffic flow and individual attitudes the process of parallel parking can be an annoyance and/or disastrous.

Recognizing the problem in our own lives we wondered what could be done to make Parallel parking easier on everyone. We feel that the PAL system is the solution. It can be initiated easily and can give the rear driver time to recognize that the car in front of it will be stopping to park giving them the option to slow down and come to a stop without impeding the driver in front or evaluating the feasibility of going around reliving stress on both drivers. The PAL System isn’t designed to replace the turn signal nor good old fashioned common sense. It is simply designed to improve the flow of traffic and make parking a less of a nerve-racking experience.
