Car top carriers mounted on SUV type vehicles present difficulties in loading and unloading due to roof height. This patent is for a mechanism that enables a car top carrier to be automatically raised or lowered to facilitate the loading and unloading of these carriers. Movement to/from the roof level is accomplished by an electrically powered drive system. During all operations the load remains parallel to the ground so that ease of loading/unloading is maximized. At roof height the cargo motion onto and off the roof is parallel to the ground while motion between roof height and loading/unloading position is near vertical. The invention includes elements that ensure the majority of the cargo load is supported on the ground during loading/unloading, thus ensuring vehicle loads are minimized. All parts of the system are stowed in a low profile roof mounted package that securely holds the carrier in place. Setup and operation involve a minimal number of easy to execute steps. A product family is envisioned including versions that load from the side or rear of the vehicle and versions for car top boxes, bicycles, or kayaks/canoes.
