Smart Sewerage System

[Category : - OTHER]
[Viewed 558 times]

As the severity of global warming is increasing, the frequency of extreme natural events such as flooding and draughts is increasing, which can be seen in California, Cape Town, Mumbai, Delhi, Sydney, and many more countries across the globe, which puts severe pressure on our water resources and sewerage systems. The sewerage systems, in particular, are old, hard to maintain, and provide very little functionality in addition to transport wastage from source to the water treatment plant. With some modifications, we can bring them to the 21st century, and use them to their full potential to preserve our urban habitats and at the same time increase reusability of our most precious water source: water.

This technology uses sensors placed at strategic locations to determine flow, pH, salinity, and other parameters, which are measured, processed, stored, and integrated with a SCADA system. The data collected by this method can be used for identifying blockages, chokepoints in real-time, and automatic dosing system. In the long term, this data will provide early blockage warning system, long-term maintenance schedule frequency decision by predictive data modeling, and increase the accuracy of rainfall predictions, and their effect on our infrastructure and surroundings.

For flooding, excess water can be rerouted via a simple flap mechanism, and relatively better quality water (for example in stormwater drainage system) can be purified, segregated, and rerouted to the place of the intended application. The purification can be done via dosing (eg. chlorine, alum), or physical filters such as charcoal. The segregation is done via the data received by the sensors in real-time. Additionally, for severe flooding, a provision for an emergency bypass is also made, which can transfer semi-purified water to a natural or artificial reservoir.
